Split one spread, or join two pages into one

Some archives store a spread as one wide image, some store it as two portrait scans, and most mix the two. Today the converter can split every wide page or none of them, as a whole-file setting. The planned verbs sit in the Pages tab menu: select a wide page and Split this spread cuts it into two pages in reading order; select the first of a pair and Join with next as a spread makes one landscape page the reader shows whole. We are being straight with you: neither is live yet, so this page does not offer them.

What the Pages tab does today: every page of the open file as a grid of thumbnails, wide pages drawn double width so the book reads like a book, with remove, restore and set as cover on each page. The whole-file spread splitting option is live in the Studio for archives where every wide page should be cut.

Per-page split and join are coming soon

These verbs are planned, not live yet. Use the whole-file spread option in the Studio in the meantime.

What split and join will do

  1. Split one wide page

A scanned spread becomes two portrait pages, right half first under manga direction, the way the preview already reads. A wide splash page you want whole stays whole.

  2. Join two portrait scans

Two pages that were one spread in print become one landscape page, so the reader shows them together instead of one after the other.

  3. Say when it cannot apply

Split on a portrait page and Join on the last page dim with the reason rather than doing something surprising. Join also needs both pages to share a height, and says so when they do not.

  4. Until then: the whole-file option

Spread splitting for every wide page in a file is live today in the Studio. It is the right answer for archives that store all spreads the same way.

Honesty first

A split that put the halves in the wrong order would break reading direction, the worst possible bug for manga. The verbs ship when the halves land in the order the preview shows.

The Pages tab helps now

Remove, restore and set as cover are live on every page, wide pages are drawn as spreads in the grid, and the whole-file spread option is live in the Studio.

Frequently asked questions

Can I split or join a spread from the Pages tab right now?

Not yet, and we will not pretend otherwise. Both rows are in the page menu, marked Soon, so you can see where they will be. The whole-file spread splitting option is live today.

How is this different from the spread option in the Studio?

The Studio option applies to every wide page in the file. These verbs apply to one page each, so a splash page can stay whole while a scanned spread next to it gets cut.

How is this different from split and merge CBZ?

Split and merge CBZ reshapes whole files: chapters into a volume, a huge file into parts. This page is about one page inside a file.

Will you announce when it is ready?

Yes. When they ship the Soon mark comes off the rows and this page hosts the feature. You can vote for it on the roadmap in the meantime.

MangaConverter runs on Kindle Comic Converter (KCC), the open-source engine, for the conversions that are live today. Per-page split and join are planned steps in front of that pipeline, and this page will host them honestly once they work.
